The next two pieces are from a series titled Cutting Space. Mounted flat on the wall.
In 2015 I decided to start with an underpainting of acrylic. I planned on starting with acrylic paint to get an idea of the direction of the color and then work in oil. At first, I thought I’d paint over the acrylic, but I saw that I liked some of the marks so I let the acrylic underpainting show through the oil paint. I like to show the process. It makes the piece more intimate. The last thing I want is a pretentious, slick painting.
