...DEFYING GRAVITY
Sculptural Paintings at Cassina - a Solo Site-Specific Exhibition
Exhibition continues till December 20, 2011

Walk into Cassina’s Soho, New York location to be transported beyond the walls of this vast open space. New York City artist, Yvette Cohen, has designed a site-specific installation that emphasizes the openness of Cassina's space, while complimenting it's distinctive display of furniture. Cohen's work will be on view at 151 Wooster Street from the opening date of November 8, 2011, from 6-9, till December 20, 2011.

Cohen’s large, boldly colored shaped canvases appear sculptural, yet mount flat on the wall. Groupings of two, three or more of these oil paintings seemingly defy gravity and appear to exist in a boundless space, activating entire walls.

The installation comprises Cohen’s Ara Pacis series. Ara Pacis translates from the Latin as altar to peace. The shapes display a peculiar perspective, balancing harmony with intrigue. While primarily oil paintings, their illusion of sculptural form has even gained them admission to sculpture exhibitions.

...Cohen's open studio was blogged on the French blog Terre de Compassion, the Compassionate Earth. A partial English translation follows...

Yvette Cohen presents flat geometric shapes that create both the illusion of depth and protrusion from the wall. These paintings can be compared to kites. Space is transformed. Gravity disappears. The visitor has the sensation of being elevated among the paintings.

In Andre Breton's "Dictionaire Abrege du Surrealisme" of 1938, he describes the Exquisite Corpse as "a game of folded paper which consists in having several people compose a phrase or drawing collectively, none of the participants having any idea of the nature of the preceding contribution." The Exquisite Corpse was in keeping with the Surrealists aim of creating via "the dictation of thought, in the absence of all control exercised by reason, and outside all aesthetic or moral preoccupations."
