Solo Show. There's More Than One Way to See Things

The Visual Arts Center of New Jersey’s Members Committee Presents a solo show of Yvette Cohen’s Building a Square paintings.
The SQUARE represents stability, strength, balance, and peace of mind. Cohen explores the infinite possibilities of this fundamental geometric shape featuring 13 of the over 40 paintings in the Building a Square series. Vibrant shaped painting-sculptures blur the boundaries between two-dimensional and three-dimensional art, expanding the perception of space beyond the artwork itself.
Made of acrylic paint and wood dowels on shaped canvases, the paintings mount flat against the wall without the need for frames.
There is more than one way to perceive the Building a Square paintings; their ambiguity sparks curiosity and further engages viewers’ connection to the artwork.

    Reception September 21 2-4 pm.
    September 21-November 10

    Atmospheric Perspective:
Contemporary Approaches to a Traditional Technique

Yvette Cohen was included in this exhibition of artist members from the NY Artists Circle
    Curated by Christina Massey

    Opening Reception: December 21st, 6-8pm
    Dates: December 21st, 2018 - January 19th, 2019

    Chashama
    485 Madison Ave

Atmospheric or aerial perspective refers to the traditional painting technique of creating an illusion of depth or distance by making objects appear less detailed and typically bluer than nearer objects, traditionally utilized in creating realistic landscapes. It is described as the air and all the particles in it, from dust to pollution that lingers between the eye of the viewer to the distant object that is the subject. Contemporary perspective of what exists in that air is vastly different however than in past eras.

Artist Talk and Closing Reception Sunday December 16 at 4:00 pm

The weight of our country’s political schism is brought into view, both symbolically, as well as literally, in this four person exhibition at ODETTA. The overriding social concerns of this era prompts a preoccupation with our mortality, but, in some cases, also demands a persistent need for escape, a release into the imagination.

A Site-Specific Installation by Yvette Cohen

Over 20 pieces of artwork were created especially for Basta Pasta, the renowned Japanese-Italian restaurant in the heart of the Flatiron district of New York City.

Art was mounted throughout the restaurant:over the bar, on the side walls, in the back room. Volumes seemed to float in space. The entire restaurant was the canvas.

Basta Pasta was established in Tokyo in 1985 and modeled after the TV program Iron Chef as a totally open Kitchen Theater. New York's Basta Pasta opened in 1990.

The installation was on view April, May and June 2017.

A bootstrap brigade standing on the shoulders of giants, the artists of the Hullaballoo Collective, similarly united to address the problems of exhibiting in a cloistered environment, were proud to band together in unruly style and present to the public, not a manicured, homogenous, and academic selection—but a wild swath of the arts today.
