Building a Square
The SQUARE is stability, strength, balance, peace of mind. I explore the possibilities of this simple geometric shape in my Building a Square series of over 30 paintings and 20 drawings. These boldly colored shaped painting-sculptures blur the lines between two-dimensional and three-dimensional art. Bold and vibrant colors infuse energy and vitality, while also exhibiting subtle shades and tones that create depth and nuance.
The paintings are acrylic paint and wood dowels on shaped canvas that mount on the wall with no need for a frame. With no frame, they integrate themselves onto the wall to exhibit a greater sense of openness and space. Fluctuating space invites the viewer in to then lead them out. Is it the inside, or the outside?
I experiment to create shapes that defy the laws of physics and logic. My shapes are meticulously controlled, well-behaved geometric structures that exhibit occasional playfulness. Their unpredictability inspires curiosity, engaging viewers to delve deeper into the artwork. Seeing artwork that is both intriguing and softly-spoken, yet powerful, the viewer ultimately experiences calm.
